Napier Port identified the need to implement a more robust approach to managing its critical risks in 2018.

Over the last four years the van Schaik Health and Safety Solutions Team have partnered with Napier Port to deliver the Port’s Critical Control Management Program which has resulted in significant safety improvements across the port’s operations.

The program approach uses safety leadership, worker engagement and project management principles and has resulted in increased engagement with both workers and management and an increased understanding, awareness and knowledge on managing the Port’s critical risks across all port operations.

The program scope covers both onshore and offshore critical risks associated with port operations and enables the Port to:

• Fulfil its duty to manage the operational hazards that give rise to critical risks to a tolerable level to prevent harm; and

• Have suitable and effective contingency measures in place to minimise any resulting harm.
